My sister and I will be in Stockholm over Christmas and I thought I'd use/abuse the planet to get some info I can't find anywhere. I know that 24th December is the big day, and the 25th and 26th are public holidays, and I know when the tourist stuff is open, but I can't find much info on when the practical stuff like shops and transport shut and reopen again. Does the metro and other public transport run through-out? What about transport to the rest of Sweden? What days will the supermarkets / mini-markets / restaurants / cafes be open (we don't want to starve :-)? And if you had the choice between staying in Gamla Stan or Fridhelmsplan, which would be better for the practical stuff like supermarkets and cheap restaurants?
Oh, and does it look like snow this Christmas? :-)
Thanks!

I haven't spent a Christmas
I haven't spent a Christmas in Stockholm so I don't know the details, but here's some more information:
"Does the metro and other public transport run through-out?"
You can find more information on http://sl.se/ . I had a look at the metro and it looks like the lines (I looked at two) are closed between 01.00 - 06.00 the night before/on Christmas eve. During the 24th it's the normal time schedule between 06.00 - 15.00 ("Lördag, söndag och helgdag", i.e. the schedule for Saturday, Sunday and holiday). After 15.00 there's a special schedule which you can find if you search for "VJulTUB".
"What about transport to the rest of Sweden?"
I guess you mean by train? Take a look at http://www.sj.se/ .
"What days will the supermarkets / mini-markets / restaurants / cafes be open (we don't want to starve :-)?"
Sorry can't answer this one (I usually stay at home during Christmas). But most larger supermarkets should be open during the day, as far as I know.
"Oh, and does it look like snow this Christmas? :-)"
Not at the moment :(. It did snow yesterday, but it was too warm for the snow to stay on the ground. But the forecast looks brighter, it's going to get colder soon!
Oh and if you haven't, I recommend that you check http://www.alltomstockholm.se/ . Although it.'s only in Swedish. :/ (Well, you can always run it through Google Translate).
Some answers
"And if you had the choice between staying in Gamla Stan or Fridhelmsplan, which would be better for the practical stuff like supermarkets and cheap restaurants? "
When it comes to pricing, I would say that Fridhemsplan is better, while Gamla stan is nicer to be at (gamla = old, i.e. the buildings are much older and so on).
However; if you keep up the pace you can walk between the two places in less than 20 minutes (the distance is less than 3 km).
"Does the metro and other public transport run through-out?"
I usually walk everywhere inside the city core, but I think all transportation will be active, but with fewer departures.
"What days will the supermarkets / mini-markets / restaurants / cafes be open (we don't want to starve :-)?"
Supermarkets are usually open even on the 24th, however with much reduced opening hours. As for the rest I don't know, I usually spend my christmas at my parents place, and thus don't have to care about that.
"Oh, and does it look like snow this Christmas? :-)"
Sadly, no. The ground is bare and the temperature above 0 C at the Moment. However, there are rumors that it will get colder.
Gamla stan is much more nice
Gamla stan is much more nice and cosy compared to Fridhemsplan. From Gamla stan you can walk to almost everything since it's in down town Stockholm. Prices will be a bit higher though :) Don't forget to take a walk to: - The south side around Medborgarplatsen and surroundings - Christmas celebration at Skansen - Walk around at Östermalm around Greve Turegatan (street) and surroundings - Lots of museums and other happenings Don't worry about super markets and such, most of them will be open :)
:)
