Some answers

"And if you had the choice between staying in Gamla Stan or Fridhelmsplan, which would be better for the practical stuff like supermarkets and cheap restaurants? "
When it comes to pricing, I would say that Fridhemsplan is better, while Gamla stan is nicer to be at (gamla = old, i.e. the buildings are much older and so on).
However; if you keep up the pace you can walk between the two places in less than 20 minutes (the distance is less than 3 km).

"Does the metro and other public transport run through-out?"
I usually walk everywhere inside the city core, but I think all transportation will be active, but with fewer departures.

"What days will the supermarkets / mini-markets / restaurants / cafes be open (we don't want to starve :-)?"
Supermarkets are usually open even on the 24th, however with much reduced opening hours. As for the rest I don't know, I usually spend my christmas at my parents place, and thus don't have to care about that.

"Oh, and does it look like snow this Christmas? :-)"
Sadly, no. The ground is bare and the temperature above 0 C at the Moment. However, there are rumors that it will get colder.
