After leaving Sydney, New Zealand was the first stop to catch up with family and friends.
Photos from Easter Island, September 2002. Easter Island (Rapa Nui to the locals) is the most remote island on the planet, and it shows. Of course, people don't come to Rapa Nui for the surfing, they come for the Moai, the giant carved statues that litter the island.
Photos from Chile, September and October 2002.
October 2002. Bolivia is a country only starting to realise it's tourist potential. I really loved the place, it has some magnificent scenery, there were none of the hassles you get in more touristy places, and the company along the way was simply the best.
October - November 2002. Peru, home of the Inca's. This place draws the tourists like nothing else, and with good reason too. If you can stand the constant hassling from the touts and shoe-shine boys, this place more than delivers on the promise of ancient mysteries and dramatic scenery.
November, December 2002, January 2003. Think Mexico and think all those cliched, tourist-ridden stereotypes? So did I, until I went there. Now I absolutely love the place. It's the people who really make this country worth visiting, but the music and history aren't far behind.

December 2002 - January 2003. Guatemala was a quick detour as the return route from Cancun to Mexico City, with the highlight the ruins at Tikal.
January 2003. In the Carribean, I met up with a couple of friends from Australia, Linda and Judy, for some fun in the sun and on the beaches.

January - February 2003. Photos from the USA
February 2003. After the USA, the UK was a return to (relative) sanity. For some reason, I didn't take many photo's here. What's that about familiarity breeding contempt, or at least indifference??? Still, there's nothing indifferent about the National Gallery and the British Museum.
March 2003. Sorry, Mr Rumsfeld, I kind of like Old Europe just the way it is... Belgium wasn't originally on my itinerary for this trip, but was quickly added after making some great friends on tour in Bolivia & Peru: Elke, Ellen & Simon. Thanks to their wonderful hospitality, and that of their families and friends, Belgium (and the Netherlands, Germany and France) became a wonderful highlight. I've fallen for the place, and will definitely be back again...
March 2003. One weekend, Elke, Patricia, Ellen, Simon and I piled into a car and set off from Brussels for the Netherlands and Germany.
April 2003. A quick detour took me to Spain with two goals in mind: the Prado Museum in Madrid, and Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

May 2003. I loved Belgium so much the first time, I went back for a second helping.
May 2003. After leaving Belgium, it was back to England for a couple more days in Cheltenham with Linda and Judy, including a day-trip over the border to Wales.
May 2003. Finally it was home by way of a 5 hour stopover in Hong Kong.
